  • 06/24/2022 - 06/26/2022 All day

A long-standing tradition of the TCD is to enjoy the extended daylight hours by riding the northwest area of the lower peninsula.  A three-day event, most ride up on Friday, tour the area on Saturday and head home on Sunday. A few extend the weekend in either direction to further enjoy the beautiful scenery around both sides of Grand Traverse Bay.  The Longest Day is a good event for both road riders and ADVers, as both road routes and ADV routes are planned and ridden.  Good for campers and non-campers, the campers stay at either the Interlochen State Park or Cycle Moore Campground while the non-campers tend to bed down at The Interlochen Motel.

This year's road ride is planned up the east side of Grand Traverse Bay, through the famous Tunnel of Trees and on to the Legs Inn.  The ADV routes will be developed and posted.

Watch the Forums for additional details and posting of the GPS routes.

To enter from the north side, take Patterson Lake Road (D32) and turn south on Glenbrook Road, which becomes Hankerd Road after the road turns sharply to the right.

To enter from the south side, take N. Territorial and turn north onto Hankerd Road.

Either way, watch for and turn onto Halfmoon Lake Access Road.  Follow the access road to a big parking lot.  The Willow Shelter will be to your right as you face the lake.

A Michigan State Recreational Passport is required to enter the park.  Most members have it on their license plate tabs, others can purchase at the park entrance.

This is an easy to medium gravel and back road ride. There will be deep gravel through rolling and scenic forest roads, and some twisty pavement. There are a few creek crossings (with work arounds if you don’t want to try them or if the weather is bad). We will throw in a few sightseeing opportunities, possibly including the fire tower, the Knightsridge Space Observatory ruins, and the Empire State Quarry. Newbies are required to climb the fire tower, in full gear.

There will be a ride down, on Friday for those that can make it. We will stay in Shelbyville Indiana on Friday night. The real ride starts Saturday morning from Shelbyville to Tell City, IN. the route will be about 250 miles. We will stay Saturday night in Tell City departing Sunday morning for the return to Shelbyville. We will again cover about 250 miles. Those who don’t want to ride home Sunday night can stay over again in Shelbyville and ride home Monday. I will have routes to and from the Detroit area for Friday and Monday that follow state and county roads with little or no freeway. There could be stretches of gravel, but these will not be “adventure” routes.

For Friday and Sunday nights make your reservation at:

Econo Lodge – 68 E Rampart Rd, Shelbyville, IN

For Saturday night make your reservation at:

Ramada Limited – 235 Orchard hill Dr, Tell City, IN

There are other motel options nearby if these are full or do not meet your lofty standards.
