Great Lake Circle Tour

07/28/2018 - 08/04/2018 All day
Lake Superior Lake Superior

General Overview

A week long trip going clockwise around Lake Superior, starting in Ludington and ending in Newaygo/Baldwin. This is the route and campgrounds that Pat O’Neill and Dale Estes are planning on and will be the ‘official’ TCD spots, however, you are certainly encouraged to do your own thing whether that is different campgrounds or hotels, different stops along the way or whatever. We will pick a morning breakfast spot for each day where we can all meet up, talk about that day’s coming ride and break into riding groups.

General Route Map:

Watch the TCD forums for posting of the official GPS routes and tracks. Here is a general look at the plan:

We'll upload the tracks and routes as we get them finalized.  Here's a copy of the itinerary in pdf format.  It lists the camp sites  and phone numbers, it's advised to make your reservations as soon as you can.

This is an easy to medium gravel and back road ride. There will be deep gravel through rolling and scenic forest roads, and some twisty pavement. There are a few creek crossings (with work arounds if you don’t want to try them or if the weather is bad). We will throw in a few sight seeing opportunities if possible including the fire tower, the Knightsridge Observatory ruins, and the Empire State Quarry. Newbies are required to climb the fire tower.

There will be a ride down, on Friday for those that can make it. We will stay in Shelbyville Indiana on Friday night. The real ride starts Saturday morning from Shelbyville to Tell City, IN. the route will be about 250 miles. We will stay Saturday night in Tell City departing Sunday morning for the return to Shelbyville. We will again cover about 250 miles. Those who don’t want to ride home Sunday night can stay over again in Shelbyville and ride home Monday. I will have routes to and from the Detroit area for Friday and Monday that follow state and county roads with little or no freeway. There could be stretches of gravel, but these will not be “adventure” routes.

For Friday and Sunday nights make your reservation at:

Econolodge – 68 E Rampart Rd, Shelbyville, IN

    317-398-0472

For Saturday night make your reservation at:

Ramada Inn Limited – 235 Orchard hill Dr, Tell City, IN

    812-547-3234

There are other motel options nearby if these are full or do not meet your lofty standards.

let me know who is in and who will make the Friday morning ride down so I can plan accordingly.

    • This is a TCD favorite, and we're heading to Lewiston again this year!
    • The official camp location will be Shady Acres Camp Ground (tent camping, RV hook-ups and cottages are available) just south of town.
    • For lodging in town there are lots of options available. Quite a few of us are staying at the Redwood Motor Inn right in town next to food and everything else. They also have a large fire pit right on the property.
    • Both road and adventure GPS routes will be available on the forum for download. The road routes are around 185-200 miles and the Adv Track is 155 miles.

Tawas Point State Park , East Tawas, MI. Pay memorial tribute with other TCD members to those brave sailors lost from the Edmund Fitzgerald to the icy waters of Lake Superior. We ride up to Tawas Point State Park on Saturday. Have dinner in East Tawas, then build a camp fire you can see from the moon! Either camp at the park or grab a motel in East Tawas. Turnout is weather dependent. Last year (snow) we had one rider and 3 arrived in a car. If the weather is great we could have 25-30. Last chance to sneak a ride in for the year.

Check the TCD message forum for info, updates and details.
